Building traffic to your site is the hardest part of being a webmaster. To build significant traffic, you have to have a lot of time, or a lot of money. I've spent A LOT of time trying to build traffic using various free marketing techniques. After much research and tireless hours, I've begun to reap the rewards of my efforts without having to invest loads of money on traffic. Having experienced the agony of figuring out some of the tricks to building traffic without buying advertising, I'm going to share what I've found with you.
The first few suggestions I have are some quick ways to get easy traffic. Once you get to the Build Links portion of the page, it gets a little more in-depth and requires a better understanding of how search engines work.
LinkReferral
The single best free way to gain unique, quality traffic to your site I've found is LinkReferral. I can't put into words how much LinkReferral has helped my site and given me a solid, quality base of traffic to build upon. To find out more about LinkReferral, you can either visit the LinkReferral page or check out my Traffic Exchanges page.
Traffic Exchanges
Traffic Exchanges are a good way to gain traffic, but the visitors from these sites have a high bounce rate. Take a look at my Traffic Exchanges page for my recommendations on using this free technique to build traffic.
Domain Name
To acquire quality traffic from sources like search engines, my number one recommendation is to purchase a domain name. Not only does it give your site more credibility, but some search engines, directories, and bookmarking sites ban sites that don't have a first level domain name. For example, freewebs.com/yoursitename will not be accepted in many free directories. Unfortunately, acquiring a domain name usually costs money. You can purchase .net domain names for as low as $.99 though, so I feel like it is worth the investment. From personal experience, buying a domain name was the turning point in making my webpages successful.
Search Engine Submission
Once you have acquired a domain name, you should submit your site and a sitemap to the major search engines like Yahoo, Google, and MSN.
Build Links!
Organic search engines (i.e. Google) use an algorithm to find your site that is based, though not solely, on the number of links you have pointing toward your site. If you plan on being a major force with the search engines, you have to continuously build links pointing to your page. Search engines are a popularity contest, so link building is essential to your marketing success.
Article Marketing
If you're an expert in your field, you can write articles on the same topic that your website is about and submit them to websites that will publish them in their database. Include your website link in the article. Search engines look favorably towards this kind of link because it shows that you and your site have some credibility.
Directory Submission
A good way to build quality links to your site is through directory submission. There are sites called website directories that are giant databases of links. Search engines favor these types of links because they generally have high pagerank, so you have a quality link if you are listed in their directory. The more directories you submit your site to the better. Even minor directories can help your pagerank, and in turn, your position on search engines.
